to have emerged from non-being - a state of “pulseless blur” - that spreads further than time and space. This observer-relative realm of pure possibilities can be imagined in multiple ways and different meanings can be ascribed to it. In capturing blank spaces and missing things I was trying to imbue the viewer with a sense of intimacy, such that invites introspection. I was also trying to remind the viewer how temporary everything is in existence. We intend to create something to manifest our actuality, but tomorrow can seize to exist too.Looking back at these photographs, I realise that “In Absence” is my meditation on the notion of finiteness: the desire to concede, absorb and ultimately naturalise our closeness to nothingness. city “With cities, it is as with dreams: everything imaginable can be dreamed, but even the most unexpected dream is a rebus that conceals a desire or, its reverse, a fear. Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else.” Italo Calvino, Invisible Cities ‘Tehran, the invisible city’ is a body of work, documentary in style, which primarily serves my desire to remain close with a city, where my innermost thoughts and emotions reside. Eleven years ago I landed in Australia as a migrant. During this time I returned to Tehran, a few weeks every few years, using street photography as a platform to reconnect with the city. In photographing Tehran, as someone who finds himself in the distance between a native and an outsider, I aim to disclose an intimate, yet critically-independent view of this less-explored megalopolis. I follow the outward transformation of the city towards a new public identity, while striving to come in terms my own identity, that finds its roots deep in this evolving land. Franz Kafka, The Metamorphosis 'Metamorphosis' symbolises the emotional and psychological transformation between conformity and autonomy. Drawing inspiration from Kafka’s novel of the same name, the collection was first photographed and created in 2005, and later revisited and reworked in 2015, as once again I asked myself the question: where is the border, where social conformity becomes repression of one’s assertive self?
